California Police Chiefs Want to Overturn Prop 47 So That Theft is a Felony Again
The California police chief’s association says that proposition 47 is clearly not working . Right now, too many criminals are getting away with crimes that prior to prop 47 they wouldn’t . Now criminals are getting a “slap on the wrist” for crimes they’re committing. In November of 2014, California voters passed prop 47 . Basically, it changed several felonies to misdemeanors, including changing the dollar amount threshold for a theft to be considered a felony. Prior to prop 47 , merchandise valued at $450 or more would be a felony. Now you have to steal over $950 for it to be considered a felony. As a result of prop 47 , there has been a serious of theft crimes that has gone up over the years and it leaves law enforcement unable to prosecute them.
